The peat-barn of 1651

Reconstruction and restoration of the peat-barn dating from 1651, in Mogno.

Among the different typical constructions which can be found in Val Maggia the peat/barn, a mushroom-shaped hut, is certainly the most interesting one. It is the characteristic wooden construction resting on stone or wood that centuries ago was used as a barn. The same term is also used when referring to other wooden constructions, like houses, farmhouses or stables.
These are all evidences of a rural way of life changing radically by the middle of the nineteenth century, after the introduction of the carriage road. Some years ago these huts were examined and classified, thus discovering some even older barns than the ones attributed to the old Walser population that pushed on into the valley around 1250.
